The Wizard's Hour The Wizard's Hour begins every Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m., immediately following the Whittier Fifth Dimension at the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier. Taking its name from the Whittier Fifth Dimension's founder and patron, The Wizard. it is a time for readng and discussion of books in English, Spanish, or both carefully chosen to match children's interests and reading development. Planned and guided by Whittier College's BCM Scholars Team, Wizard's Hour reading themes and activities vary from week to week. Themes are ften linked to current events, cultural celebrations, or holidays. The link below offers a video example from October 2009, when The Wizard sent Whittier kids a surprize package of Halloween books and other special treats. The Wizard's Hour regularly serves, too, as a quiet time for personal conversation and mentoring; and help with school projects and homework is always available. Each year, the Scholars Team adds new Wizard's Hour options to extend children's learning. A twice-weekly program to help club members build keyboarding skills was one such feature in 2009-2010. |
