Summer Program

Whittier College's McCabe Scholars provide a summer educational program for children of all ages at Whittier's Boys & Girls Club. Its goal is to extend academic learning throughout the school year. The theme and organization of each summer's program vary, reflecting the creativity of the Scholars selected to run it. Like the Fifth Dimension, however, the summer program always combines play and education, engaging children in reading, writing, mathematics, and problem solving through computer-mediated activity.

The summer 2006 program, "A Pirate's Life for Me " (above), served 261 children with daily computer learning sessions and pirate-themed craft activities. A wildlife show and film field trips were also popular features. Three McCabe Scholars created and ran the program: senior Jessica Baeza and sophomores Teresa Hidalgo and Alexandra Guevara (pictured, left to right).

From June through August 2007, The "Hollywood Stars" summer program provided a total of 254 children and youth with computer-based education and fun. Nearly 30 participated in each of three daily sessions, meeting the challenges offered by a wide range of "edutainment" and simulation computer games. Special writing and craft activities, organized around the Hollywood theme, followed every day. And during field trips to Hollywood's El Capitan Theater, its "Walk of Stars," and Universal Studios, participants learned about movieland history and film-making techniques. Four Scholars created and ran the 2007 program: senior Karen Eisenhut, junior Annette Trujillo, and sophomores Sonia Guevara and Mayra Murillo. (Pictures of "Hollywood Stars" are coming soon!)
