Summer Program

Summer2010The BCM summer program held at Whittier's Boys & Girls Club has the goal of extending children's learning of school-related subjects throughout the summer, a time when declines in student achievement frequently occur.  To achieve that goal, the program provides computer-based learning activities – including educational games and Internet research, supplemented with field trips, arts and crafts, and other projects. Three BCM Scholars, selected for their outstanding performance during the previous school year, plan and guide each summer's program. From summer to summer the theme and organization of the program vary, reflecting the creativity of the selected Scholars.

Travelocity, the 2011 summer program, was designed by Cristina Alcaraz, Stephanie Carmona, and Cristal Delgado. Its goals were to deepen participants' appreciation for their own own cultures and develop understanding of cultures, languages, and geography in countries around the world. In addition to computer-mediated play and learning each Monday through Friday, Travelocity included special sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays with arts and crafts activities related to the "country of the week." Field trips to La Cultura Plaza/Placita Olvera, a historic and cultural site in downtown Los Angeles, and to performances of Ballet Folklorico Paso de Oro, dovetailed with the program's cultural learning theme.

A total of 330 children and youth participated in Travelocity from June 27 through August 19.
