Day
On Campus
Our
future begins today!
Nuestro futuro comiensa ahora!
Day
on Campus promotes college as an attainable goal for socially
and economically marginalized youth from schools in and around
Whittier, California, USA. Sponsored by the B. C. McCabe Foundation,
Day on Campus is led by Whittier College undergraduates selected
for the McCabe Scholars team.
To develop early interest in college, preference for participation
goes to classes in the upper-elementary and middle-school
grades. During the 2006-2007 school year, 225 students from
four schools, along with 27 of the students' parents, joined
in Day on Campus.
Before
a group's day-long visit to Whittier College, the McCabe Scholars
exchange personal letters with each visiting student to answer
individual questions about college. The Scholars also make
several trips to the visitors' classroom, leading activities
that help students learn about admissions requirements, financial
aid, and reasons for going to college. During these activities,
the Scholars often share stories of their personal pathways
to college.
Interactive participation in regular college classes (sometimes
in professors' homes, as at left) is a highlight of the campus
visit. Always included, too, are lunch with college students
in the campus dining hall, a tour of dormitory rooms, and
exploration of libraries, laboratories, and other college
sites. Other events are tailored to the interests of the individual
class and teacher.
