Undergraduate
Section
Department of Education and Child Development
Whittier College, Whittier, CA, USA
Professor: Don Bremme
Education
406, Learning and Learners, is a teacher education course
focused on contextual and culturally situated theories
of mind and practice. Undergraduate sections are affiliated
with the Whittier Fifth Dimension at the Boys & Girls
Club of Whittier, where students in the course spend one
afternoon a week playing and learning as children's partners
in computer-mediated activity.
Education
406 strives to situate students' learning in cultural activity,
instantiating theoretical perspectives students study in
the course. Students' Fifth Dimension practice provokes
questions and issues that become the center of class discourse.
Theoretical perspectives and principles offered in texts
function as tools for reframing questions, analyzing issues,
and reflecting on experiences in and beyond the Fifth Dimension.
The
first in a sequence of four required core courses in the
Whittier College Teacher Education Program, Education 406
serves candidates for both elementary and secondary teaching
credentials. Students are juniors and seniors majoring
in many different disciplines. (State of California law
precludes majoring in Education.)
